Police are investigating after a body was discovered Monday in a parking garage near the Syracuse VA Medical Center and Syracuse University.
The deceased individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found in the VA garage on Irving Avenue, adjacent to the hospital and across from the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety issued an alert to the university community confirming the discovery. The alert clarified that the individual was not affiliated with Syracuse University. Several members of the SU community reported witnessing the body in the garage.
Authorities, including the Syracuse Police Department, Veterans Affairs Police, and Syracuse University campus police, promptly responded to the scene. Initially, Syracuse University mistakenly reported in its alert that the body was found in the Irving Garage, a separate facility located down the street. This error was later corrected, specifying the VA garage as the location.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, and an investigation is ongoing. Officials have not yet provided additional details about the deceased individual or the cause of death.
In light of the incident, Syracuse University reminded students of available mental health and support resources. The Barnes Center at The Arch can be reached at (315) 443-8000, Student Outreach and Support at (315) 443-4357, and Hendricks Chapel at (315) 443-2901.
