A devastating shootout in St. Clair Township has left 4-year-old Rosalie Carey dead, Detective Dakota Wetzel critically injured, and the suspect, 30-year-old Joseph Como, fatally shot. The tragic incident unfolded shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving a community in mourning and sparking renewed discussions about mental health and gun violence.
According to the St. Clair Township Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding a possibly suicidal man walking down the street armed with a firearm. Upon locating the suspect, identified as Joseph Como, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. However, Como opened fire, triggering a shootout that had devastating consequences.
Emergency responders acted swiftly, flying both Rosalie and Detective Wetzel to nearby hospitals. Despite extensive efforts to save her life, Rosalie succumbed to her injuries later that evening. Detective Wetzel underwent emergency surgery and, as of Thursday morning, is in stable condition.
St. Clair Township Police Chief Brian McKenzie provided an update on Detective Wetzel’s condition:
“Detective Wetzel is a fighter. He opened his eyes and gave a thumbs-up to his family overnight. We are hopeful for his recovery, but it will be a long road ahead.”
