Shamone Duncan Cook County, Illinois Obituary, Cause of Death; Deputy Shamone Duncan Shot Dead During Her Sister’s Birthday in Turks and Caicos
Shamone Duncan, a 50-year-old deputy with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois, was tragically shot and killed while on vacation in Turks and Caicos over the weekend.
Duncan, a devoted mother, grandmother, and law enforcement officer, was in the midst of celebrating her sister’s birthday at the Aziza Restaurant in Providenciales on Saturday night when the violence unfolded.
According to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Duncan and two others, including local resident Dario Stubbs, were shot outside the restaurant around 10 p.m.
The authorities revealed that a shooting occurred after an argument broke out between individuals downstairs, and gunfire quickly followed. While Duncan was at a rooftop party during the incident, she was struck by a stray bullet.
The gunfire also injured another person, a 29-year-old male, who is reportedly receiving medical treatment. Tragically, both Duncan and Stubbs succumbed to their injuries, with Duncan passing away at the scene and Stubbs dying later in the hospital.
The third victim is currently undergoing treatment but is expected to survive. Despite the tragic loss, the authorities have stated that there is no evidence to suggest that Duncan, Stubbs, or the third victim were the intended targets.
The incident appears to have been a senseless act of violence that occurred during an altercation unrelated to Duncan herself. As of the latest updates, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.
Duncan, who had worked for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years, had recently been reassigned to Cermak Health Services. She was well-respected in her field and had a reputation for dedication, compassion, and service to her community.
Her passing has left a profound impact on her colleagues and the people who knew her. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office expressed their heartbreak at the loss of one of their own, describing Duncan as a “shining example of excellence” and a “beacon of strength, compassion, and leadership.”
They emphasized her deep commitment to justice and her unwavering passion for protecting others. Duncan’s family, who spoke with ABC 7 Chicago, described her as a devoted matriarch.
She was in Turks and Caicos on a much-needed vacation, spending time with her sister to celebrate her birthday. Her son, Shamon Payton, recounted the frightening moments during the shooting.
According to Payton, when the shooting began, bystanders shouted for people to take cover. Duncan, however, stood up and was struck by a stray bullet, ultimately succumbing to her injuries despite efforts from others to assist her.
